Activities: Maintaining seaside subtropical garden, building, paths, weeding, mulching, digging, maintaining organic vegetable garden and tunnel house. 4 hr/day plus helping prepare evening meal and doing dishes.
Comments: Have your own room in lovely caravan surrounded by foliage and beside the sea. Quiet lifestyle with one woman. Asian food a favourite. Beside beautiful wild beach, close to cafe, yoga and tai chi classes, bush and beach walks. Nearest town Westport (28 km), can pick up if no bus available but I need notice to do that. You need to be self sufficient as there is not much entertainment in the immediate area apart from walking, reading, cafe, etc.
Hobbies: Gardening, singing, tai chi, sculpture, reading, ukulele, walking.

Activities: Backpackers & Bar in the centre of Greymouth, our job is to look after our guests and keep the place in high standards. 3-4 hours a day for free accommodation, one free beer, free pool table, free Internet and more.
Comments: 2 preschool children. Rafting, fishing, hiking, sailing and much more nearby.

Activities: Not a farm. Backpackers in ex-monastery. About 3hrs cleaning each morning in exchange for accommodation (NO food).
Comments: 200m from Greymouth town centre. Helpers get own room, share facilities and TV with backpackers. Also free internet, laundry and use of bikes. I live by myself and have a dog and a cat. Can pick up from train station or bus if you call with arrival time.

Activities: 3 farms (dairy/ dairy support) within 10 min of each other. Help with 1 milking a day, feeding calves, shifting stock, and weed removal, pasture renovation, some tractor driving, fencing, building, even mechanical work. Work to suit skills.
Comments: Stay in self contained unit with a double bed, awake to birdsong and nearby creek. Continental style breakfast will be provided, evening meals with our small family. Transport for sightseeing may be available. Near beach, great fishing, hunting, kayaking, surfing, motorbike riding, hiking, hotpools & glaciers (40 min). Bus drop at nearest town Hari Hari (5 min).
Hobbies: Tramp, fish, hunt, windsurf, surf, swim, kayak, climb, goldmining, horseriding, motorbike riding, mountainbiking.

Activities: Horse training (5-7 horses). Work will involve horses, depending on experience, keen for experienced riders. Also help with gardening, some house work, cooking, a bit of child care, fence clearing, lawn mowing, pruning trees & mucking out paddocks.
Comments: Remote coastal property with wildlife reserve lagoon. We have a preschool child. Stay in own room or use a housebus in a separate location to our house. Dean goes away for stints of work, we eat variety of food. Canoeing on lagoon, have nearby lake for swimming and bush walks.
Hobbies: Horse riding, skiing, tramping, biking, canoeing, climbing, kayaking, swimming.

Comments: Town centre 5 min walk with pool and crafts (greenstone). Children and grandchildren often visit. Stay in own room with shared bathroom. I enjoy meeting people. All help at home or farm appreciated.
Hobbies: Art, music, walking dogs, bushwalks, gardening and animals.

Activities: Hobby farm with horses, sheep & lambs, chickens & pet dogs. Help with gardening (lots of fruit and veges), fencing, firewood, lawn mowing, cooking welcome! Sometimes painting & other jobs.
Comments: 1 young school child. Happy to pick up from the bus - Hokitika 2km. Stay in spare room. only upstairs room, share a bathroom. Beach waves will lull you to sleep...walk or bike 5 min. Bike available for your use. I drive to town most days. We eat all sorts of food!
Hobbies: Hunting, fishing, horses, mountain biking, lake swimming in summer, walking/tramping.

Activities: Picking and drying sphagnum moss, shifting stock, fencing, chopping firewood.
Comments: We have 3 young children preschool – school age. Basic services: generator for power mostly just for laundry, vacuuming and charging computer (not for lighting etc). We have water to house and heat it with a wetback. Presently no flush toilet only a long drop. We have a caravan for our guests. 4wd access only. We go to town (Hokitika) every 2-3 days; 30 min drive. River boundary and old forest tracks for beautiful tramping, fishing & mountain biking.
Hobbies: Milking goats, gardening, fishing & tramping.

Comments: Widow, no children. No special diets. Country lifestyle. Stay in caravan right at house under cover, near toilet, shower etc. Main meal inside house if preferred. Can pick up from bus at nearest town, Hokitika. Near lakes, gorge, tracks, tree walk, coast, glaciers. Close good neighbours.
Hobbies: Animals, gardening, friends, visiting, traveling.

Activities: Dairy farm but no stock work needed. Just a bit of pruning, planting, grubbing, weeding; maybe painting or scrubbing.
Comments: Married couple late 40's-50's, no children, 1 dog, 2 cats & lots of poultry. Smallest dairy farm in the west. Quiet valley just off State Highway 6 south of Hokitika. Own room, share bathroom and all meals - every thing in moderation.
Hobbies: Reading, gardening, knitting, poultry keeping, and dreaming of potting, weaving & building.

Activities: Lifestyle farm with homestay - belted Galloway cattle, sheep, hens dogs etc. Aim for self sufficiency so gardening, fencing, animal care, firewood and painting etc are all regular tasks. Due to the homestay, accommodation is only available May-Oct.
Comments: Semi-retired couple. Guests have own room and private bathroom. Close to lake, beach lots of bush walks. Hokitika and Ross 10 min. Can pick up from Hokitika, we go to town at least once weekly.

Activities: 450 cow dairy farm. Help with milking, weeding, gardening, stockwork, feeding calves.... etc.
Comments: Bubbly busy family of 4. Stay in double bedroom with own private bathroom & toilet. Paparoa ranges, Croesus track, Punakaiki pancake rocks, whitebaiting, fishing, tramping, surfcasting, beach and greenstone hunting. Near fantastic friendly local hotel, knife making, bone & greenstone carving. I am an avid gourmet cook, make cheese & bread. No TV but enjoy games. 2 young workers have their own house. Nearest town is Greymouth, buses 200m from house.
Hobbies: Fishing, cooking, flax weaving, family time & general crafts.

Comments: Surrounded by Dept of Conservation forests in the mountains, plenty of lakes and rivers. Shared accommodation 2 bunk beds. Pick up visitors from Christchurch with notice. Happy to take visitors on tours of the area, glaciers, pancake rocks and other places tourists rarely see. 55 min inland from Greymouth. I accommodate most diets and open to new ideas.
Hobbies: Crossbow hunting (deer, pig possum & hare), Fishing (salmon & trout), eeling. smoking eels, bushwalking & swimming.

Activities: 350 cow dairy farm, 250 sheep, 2 horses & 5 dogs. Main duties based around cows: milking, calf rearing, drenching & some tractor work.
Comments: Teenage daughter at home, teenage son at boarding school (home in holidays). Sonia is a part time teacher. Very good motel type acc near the house for visitors. Very close Franz & fox glaciers with lots of bush walks & sightseeing in the area.
Hobbies: Horses, badminton, sheepshearing, music, gardening, guitar, skiing & rugby.

Comments: ½ hour drive from Franz Josef Glacier. Family of 4, we both work from home. You have your own room. Own transport essential.
